Oli Chants by Kumu Poni Kamau'u

As a young child, Poni showed a deep interest in all things Hawaiian. He spent many years learning at the knees of his Grand Aunt 'Iolani Luahine while she served as a curator at Hulihe'e Palace in Kona and the Royal Mausoleum in Nu'uanu, Honolulu. Another mentor was Auntie Birdie Reis, a noted historian. Their invaluable teachings made Poni an asset at the Bishop Museum, the Heritage Theater, and as a Kumu in the Department of Education Hawaiian Studies Kupuna Program.

Poni was the son of Wailana and Hoakalei Kamau'u. His father, Wailana, was a master fisherman. His mother, Hoakalei, was a hula master and chanter for Auntie ‘Io.  He was a member of the Order of Kamehameha. Poni was a skilled Kumu Hula of Hālau Hula o Kaleihulumamo, a Chanter, Lei Maker and Musician and was always willing to share his mana'o of Hawaiian culture with all those wishing to learn. He died October 26, 2009,  and his beautiful spirit is dearly missed.
